HEALTH AND SAFETY

INSPECTORATE SERVICES

The Division's mission is to protect employees in specific workplaces against work-related injuries and illnesses (See ‘ The Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2004') . The Occupational Safety and Health Division performs the following major functions:

• Regulatory
• Preventative
• Investigative
• Informational
• Advisory

The work of the Division includes carrying out surveys, analyzing industrial operations for hazards and enforcing industrial safety requirements based on the Law.

The division investigates accidents at industrial establishments to ascertain their cause and makes recommendations to prevent recurrences of such accidents.

Drawings for proposed factory and warehouse facilities are examined to ensure that potential hazards are spotted and measures taken to adjust designs aimed at elimination or diminishing industrial hazards, accidents and illnesses.

The division assists other Government agencies and serves the public particularly the working public. The Division undertakes the advisory role to the following Government agencies. The Tourism and Industrial development Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (TIDCO), Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, Bureau of Standards, Comptroller of Customs and Town and Country Planning Division. It also assist in the dissemination of Information by way of seminars, symposia etc.

With respect to the Mines, Borings and Quarries Act, The Division ensures the safe operation of quarries and advises the Commissioner of Police in respect of licenses granted to quarry operators to use explosives. The Mines and Quarries ACT chapter 61:01 specifies that the Inspector for Mines and Quarries is the Chief Factory Inspector now called the Industrial Inspections Supervisor.
