Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - Friday 18 November, 2022

Ministry of Labour’s HIV Workplace Advocacy Unit (HWAU) together with the National AIDS Coordinating Committee and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), successfully held a Sensitisation session with Media practitioners. This sensitisation session took place over two (2) half days, on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th November, and included practitioners from the print, electronic and non-traditional media, in addition to the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago (MATT), and The Trinidad and Tobago Publishers and Broadcasters Association (TTPBA). Also in attendance were members of the National AIDS Coordinating Committee (NACC), UNAIDS and the HIV Workplace Advocacy Unit (HWAU).

The objectives of the two-day event were:

-          To educate and inform media workers on some of the recent advancements in science and new technologies as we continue on the road to ending AIDS by 2030.

-          To support and encourage “sensitive and sensible reporting” on Persons living with HIV and other vulnerable populations.

-          To understand the complexities of HIV and AIDS, and the role of the Media.

-          To set the stage for future engagement between the HWAU and the Media on the development of workplace policies on HIV and AIDS.

The role of the media in educating the public, creating enabling environments and decreasing stigma and discrimination in the community as we work together in achieveing the goal of ending AIDS in Trinidad and Tobago was highlighted.

Following this activity, fellow collaborators anticipate engaging individual Media Houses in ongoing programmes on HIV related issues to improve communication to the population of Trinidad and Tobago. The HIV Workplace Advocacy Unit will also be engaging Media Houses in developing their respective workplace policies on HIV and AIDS.

The development of both HIV and AIDS programmes and workplace policies are geared towards contributing to the national response to HIV and AIDS and the United Nations target of ending AIDS by 2030.
