International Labour Day, also referred to as the International Day of Workers or May Day, is celebrated on May 1, and is dedicated to workers and labourers across the world. May Day celebrates workers and encourages them to be aware of their rights.

In a statement issued to commemorate May Day 2021, the ILO Director-General, Mr. Guy Ryder, indicated that the pandemic has devastated the world of work, destroying jobs, enterprises and livelihoods, throwing millions into poverty and global development into reverse. He further underscored that looking to the future, one thing is clear: a human-centred recovery is needed, with justice and equity, a recovery that is sustainable and inclusive of all.

As such, the ILO made a call on May Day 2021 on workers, employers, governments, international organisations and all who are committed to building back better, to join forces to bring in a world of work with justice and dignity for all.
